Description

The Expeditionary Fire Support System (EFSS) along with the HIMARS multiple launch rocket system and M777 howitzer will complete the indirect fire capability of US Marine Corps Expeditionary Force. On November 10, 2004, the US Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYSCOM) awarded General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems a $18 million contract for design and development of the EFSS weapon system. The contract includes options for initial production and fielding that potentially could raise its value to approximately $300 million. The EFSS weapon system will consist of two tractor vehicles, the RT 120 M327 rifled mortar and an ammunition trailer. One vehicle will tow the RT 120 rifled mortar and the second vehicle will tow the ammunition trailer which holds up 36 120mm mortar rounds in factory-recyclable steel containers. The RT 120 mortar is capable of firing both 120mm rifled and smoothbore mortar rounds at targets ranging from 7 to 20 kilometers. The full EFSS weapon system will be airlifted within the MV-22 tiltrotor aircraft, CH-53 helicopter, C-130 and C-5 aircraft. General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems will play the prime contractor role for the EFSS program. Teammates include TDA Armaments SAS, a joint venture company of Thales and EADS, for their RT 120 Rifled Mortar System; American Growler for all EFSS vehicles; General Dynamics Canada, for the EFSS ballistic fire control computers; and Tec-Masters for integrated and contractor logistics support.
