Description

The Type 73 is a tracked medium armored personnel carrier (APC) vehicle built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Komatsu for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). It is powered by a 4-cylinder air-cooled two-cycle diesel engine rated at 300-hp that allows for a top speed of 60 kph on road carrying a 12-man crew. The Type 73 armored vehicles is equipped with a roof-mounted 12.7mm M2 machine gun and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. The Type 73 armored vehicle is intended to carry 9 to 10 infantrymen into the battlefield allowing them to shoot firearms protected under armor. Its armor and low silhouette provides protection against small and medium caliber firearms and artillery shells. The JGSDF has fielded more than 300 Type 73 tracked vehicles.
