Description

The AN/TPQ-37 Firefinder is an S-band, coherent, electronic-scanned, range-gated pulse Doppler radar with a peak power of 120 kW and an instrumented range of 50 km. Manufactured by Raytheon E-Systems, this battlefield radar provides the U.S. Army with its initial capability to locate hostile artillery and rocket launchers at their typical firing ranges. It features a monopulse antenna where beams are electronically steered in both azimuth and elevation using diode phase shifters, a pioneering application for a tactical system. The AN/TPQ-37 employs a combination of radar techniques and computer-controlled signal processing to detect, verify, and track projectiles, then extrapolates track data to determine the projectile's origin, which can be relayed to a fire direction center via voice or digital data link for counterfire.
