Description

The Zircon INF is a ground-based hypersonic cruise missile being developed by Russia as the response to the US withdrawal from the INF treaty in February 2019. Russia expects to get the new hypersonic cruise missile development completed by the end of 2020 with its deployment expected to start in 2021. The new weapon is a derivative of the Zircon hypersonic anti-ship missile. Its range may exceed 500 kilometers with an estimated 1,000-to-2,000 kilometers range as the most likely figure equipped with a lightweight nuclear warhead. The new missile may be intended to take out targets protected by advanced air and missile defense systems by means of flying at Mach 10 speeds at altitudes of 40-to-50 kilometers. The missile is expected to be fired from road mobile platforms.
