Description

The Oko, Eye in English, is a surveillance satellite network intended to provide early warning of ballistic missile launches in support of Russian Strategic Forces. Three Oko spacecraft could have been placed into orbit in June 2009 by a Rokot (modified RS-18/SS-19 Stiletto intercontinental ballistic missile) space launch system. The Oko-1 missile early warning constellation consists of about 70 spacecraft. The fully operational Oko-1 needs four 73D6 satellites placed in a highly elliptical orbit, dubbed Molnya (Lightning), to provide full-time coverage of the area of interest. The 71X6 geosynchronous satellite works as a backup system. As of July 2014 the Oko-1 constellation is in bad shape with the last 71X6 spacecraft lost in April and only two 73D6 satellites operational because no replacement has been launched since 2008.
