C-295 AEW&C
C-295 AEW&C
The Airbus Military C-295 AEW&C is an Airborne Early Warning and Command (AEW&C) aircraft fitted an advanced rotodome radar system derived from the C-295 military transport airplane. The six-meter diameter rotodome was developed by Airbus Military. The production system would be a fast-rotating device housing a state-of-the-art radar providing full 360-degree and continuous coverage of a selected area. The Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS) enables the integration of on-board sensors, including operation and monitoring of the radar system and display of the aerial picture. The C-295 AEW&C performed its maiden flight in Seville (Spain) on June 7, 2011. On June 21, 2011, Airbus Military and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the supply of a 4th generation Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar with integrated Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) to serve as the radar system for the C-295 AEW&C aircraft. The AESA radar will be supplied by Elta Systems, an IAI subsidiary. The primary sensor will generate a real time integrated Air and Maritime situation picture and electronic order of battle. The aircraft will operate with friendly forces in a Network Centric Operations (NCO) environment using data-links.
