Description

The Blacksword Barracuda is a new class of conventionally-powered attack submarines leveraging the breakthroughs accomplished during the Suffren Barracuda nuclear-powered attack submarine. The 3,000 ton class boats are intended for both littoral and oceanic environments and will be equipped with almost 30 mines, torpedoes and missiles. These boats will operate in a silent mode enhancing their survivability while powered by Lithium-Ion batteries. The launch customer of the new submarine class is the Netherlands with four boats to be delivered under the Orka program in the 2030s. The Orka is a class of conventionally-powered attack submarines intended as the replacement for the Royal Netherlands Navy Walrus boats. The ship design will be based upon the French Navy Barracuda design. The Netherlands reached an agreement with France for the new submarine in March 2024. Four boats should be built for the Netherlands with the first two boats to be delivered ten years after the contract signature.
