Description

The AN/APQ-168 is a multimode airborne radar system operating in the Ku band (IEEE designation) or J band (NATO designation), primarily used for terrain-following and terrain-avoidance in Sikorsky HH-60D and MH-60K helicopters. Housed in a nose-mounted pod, it offers various operational modes including terrain clearance, air-to-air ranging, and a side-looking mode that combines ground mapping or terrain avoidance with terrain following. The system features enhanced resistance to electronic attack, improved weather penetration, better guidance during turning maneuvers, and a power management function for semi-covert operations, utilizing a terrain storage facility to reduce its duty cycle and decrease detectability by enemy electronic support measures (ESM) equipment. Additionally, extensive built-in tests (BITE) provide a high level of fault isolation and detection.
