S-92
S-92
The S-92 designation applies to the commercial market variant which features multi-mission, high levels of safety, reliability, maintainability and low operating costs. H-92 designation is for military variants. Sikorsky claims that the levels of safety achieved by the new helicopter make it the world's safest rotorcraft. To do so, a state-of-the-art protection package was provided to crew and passengers. The S-92 itself builds on mission flexibility and low operating costs as key areas. It was fully certified to the latest FAA/JAA Part 29 requirements in 2002. In June 2004, it was certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency/Joint Aviation Authorities (EASA/JAA). Two powerful General Electric's CT7-8 engines are the key to the S-92 range, speed and maneuverability. The CT7-8 engine is a derivative of T700 engine family widely used on the successful H-60/S-70 Black Hawk helicopter family. In addition, these engines provide enough power to allow the aircraft to take-off weighing up to 11,800 kilograms and carrying 4,500 kilograms using an external cargo hook. The S-92 cabin is spacious and comfortable which allows to accommodate up to 19 passengers as well as two pilots. The S-92 helicopter can be configured to conduct Corporate/VIP transport, search and rescue (SAR), VVIP transport, scheduled airline service and offshore operations. In 2003, Cougar Helicopters of Canada became the launch customer for the S-92 with three helicopters on order. The first S-92 entered into service in September 2004 with Petroleum Helicopters, Inc. (PHI) on the Gulf of Mexico.
