Description

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Type 094A is a modified version of the Type 094 class boat intended to carry the JL-3 ballistic missile replacing the JL-2. The hull has been modified near the missile location zone and in the contours of the body to fit the new ballistic missile. The JL-3 has greater range than the JL-2 and will allow China to hit targets within the United States from the South China Sea. Reports on the new Type 094A submarine emerged in July 2016. Finally in April 2020 it was reported that China had commissioned two boats. These submarines are quieter and more capable than their predecessors even comparable to Western standards.
