Sosna
Sosna

The Sosna is a new air missile defense system (AMDS) developed by Russia through the TochMash design bureau as the replacement for the Strela-10M air defense system. The Sosna short-range anti-aircraft missile system will be integrated onto a MT-LB tracked chassis to protect troops and assets deployed to the battlefront. The new missile associated with this weapon system can engage targets at a maximum range of 10 kilometers flying at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters. The spectrum of targets to be neutralized encompasses cruise missiles and guided air-to-surface standoff weapons. Russia expects to start the official testing of the new missile system in the summer of 2015. The system should enter service with the Russian Army in the 2016-2017 timeframe. Basically, the Sosna consists of two arms equipped with six Sosna-R missiles each and central sensor package that may include electro-optic and radar sensors. Apparently, the radar sensor option was removed to avoid detection of radar emissions making engagement by anti-radar missile impossible.
