Description

The M114 155mm howitzer, which was replaced by the M198, is a towed weapon first produced in 1942 as medium artillery. The weapon uses NATO standard 155mm ammunition, with a range of about 14,000m, and was used during World War II in Korea, and in Viet Nam. Until recently they were in service with the National Guard. It was the U.S. Army and Marine Corps' principal 155-mm howitzer until the introduction o f the M198 in the early 1980s. It was exported to many other countries as well.

Variants
M114A2 This is the standard M114 fitted with the longer barrel of the newer M198.
M114/39 This was an upgrade developed by RDM (De Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij BV) Defense Engineering in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Longer barrel (39 calibers vs. 23) with increased rifling twist from 1 in 25 calibers to 1 in 20, a three-port muzzle brake, larger-capacity equilibrators, revised recoil system inclu ding new metering and recoil rods, maximum elevation increase to 70-deg (1,245 mils) and a greater barrel-chamber volume. The gun carriage was modified to handle the increased forces. Firing weight is 16,755 lb (7,600 kg); traveling length is 32 ft 10 in (10.0 m).
Modified M114 (Israel) his version was developed as a private venture by Soltam of Israel.
155-mm M65 Howitzer This is a South Korean conversion of the M114A1 (see separate database entry).
M114 (Iran) The variant is an Iranian upgraded M114 with an M114/39 barrel designated the HM41.
