Description

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) F/A-XX program is a 6th generation carrier-based fighter aircraft intended as replacement for the United States Navy (USN) F/A-18E/F Super Hornet tactical fighter aircraft and EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft. The F/A-XX program existence was unveiled in April 2012 along with the US Air Force's F-X 6th generation fighter. The development phase is slated to start by 2020 and an initial operational capability (IOC) expected between 2030 and 2035. A 6th generation aircraft should be capable of flying at higher altitudes achieving highly supersonic speeds at greater ranges than existing fourth and fifth generation combat aircraft. A 6th generation aircraft should be an unmanned platform but development of a manned version can not be ruled out.
