Description

The JL-3 Chinese Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) represents a significant advancement in the nuclear deterrence capabilities of the People's Liberation Army Navy. As a third-generation intercontinental-range SLBM, it has transformed China's sea-based nuclear deterrent from a limited regional capability into a credible global strike platform. Currently deployed on Type 094 submarines, the JL-3 is primarily designed for China's next-generation Type 096 ballistic missile submarine, which is expected to enter service in the late 2020s or early 2030s. The Type 096 is projected to carry 12 to 16 JL-3 missiles and will feature significantly improved acoustic signatures compared to the relatively noisy Type 094 platform.

Launch System The JL-3 is a solid-fuel missile developed to replace the JL-2 SLBM, and it is believed to be deployed aboard the PLAN's Type 094 (Jin)-class nuclear-powered submarines.
Propulsion Solid-fuel, three-stage ballistic missile
Warhead The JL-3 is believed to carry multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs) and is likely configured to accommodate up to three nuclear warheads.
Maximum Range The weapon is estimated to have a range of at least 10,000 kilometers, enabling China's Type 094 submarines to target locations across the continental United States from launch positions within Chinese coastal waters, such as the South China Sea or Bohai Gulf. This capability significantly enhances both survivability and strategic flexibility.
