Description

Sukhoi Su-17 is a single-engine, supersonic, swing-wing, single-seat fighter-bomber derived from the Su-7 fixed-wing aircraft. Su-7 and Su-17 variants were dubbed Fitter by NATO. Su-20 and Su-22 designations refer to export models based on the Su-17. The Soviet Air Force utilized Su-17s to perform strike missions employing unguided/guided munitions. It is powered by either an AL-21 or R-29 turbofan engine. In the early 2000s the Russian Air Force was retiring from service its Su-17 aircraft. Realizing that Su-22 remains active in large numbers with non-Russian operators Sukhoi developed the Su-22M5 version as an upgrade for existing Su-22s. Su-22M5 features state-of-the-art avionics and equipment.
