Description

The Elbit Systems Seagull is an unmanned surface vessel (USV) intended to fight water mines, submarines and other underwater vehicles threatening high value assets. The Seagull is capable of firing lightweight torpedoes against submerged threats. The vessel is equipped with two sonar sensors at the bow and stern. When a threat has been detected by the sonar systems a robot is placed underwater to further investigate the threat. Finally a mini-torpedo is released to neutralize the threat. It was designed to meet the requirements of the Israeli Navy to protect offshore gas drilling rigs in the Mediterranean. The Israeli Navy began the testing in June 2016 and may commission this new kind of vessel in 2017.
