Description

The Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) is a US Army program pursuing persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capability over the battlefield installed on an hybrid airship larger than a football field. The US Army awarded a 18-month $517 million contract to a Northrop Grumman team in June 2010 for three LEMV airships. These three airships will be tested in Afghanistan supporting US Army forces. The LEMV is capable of sustaining altitudes of 20,000-ft while keeping a geostationary position in austere forward locations for more than three weeks. It is operated using beyond-line-of-sight command and control systems.
