Description

The Italian Navy Sirio is a class of two stealth offshore patrol vessels (OPV) procured under Italy's Costellazioni 2 or NUPA project and derived from the NUMC project. The propulsion system features two Grandi Motori Trieste-Wartsila-NSD W18-V-26 XN diesel engines developing 12.96 MW of power and a top speed of 22 knots. The ship has a maximum range of 3,300 nautical miles at 17 knots. The Sirio-class vessels are equipped with two Alenia OTO Breda-Oerlikon KBA 25/80 25mm machine guns and one AB212 (or NH90) helicopter operating from the aft flight deck. The facilities also include an hangar and a laboratory for analyzing the chemical pollution of the sea water. The main The Italian Navy commissioned two Sirio patrol vessels in 2003 and 2004. These ships are responsible for protecting Italy's Economic Exclusive Zone (EZZ) and fighting against the pollution of the sea.
