Description
The Suffren Barracuda-class submarines are being designed by DCN to meet the French Navy requirements for a new class of nuclear-powered attack submarines. These vessels will replace current Amethyste/Rubis-class submarines in the next decade. Blue sea and littoral dominance will be their primary role with an important land attack capability employing the Scalp-naval cruise missile. The French Navy plans call for the procurement of 6 Suffren/Barracuda-class submarines scheduled for delivery from 2017 through 2027. The French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) signed the launch contract worth 7.8 billion Euro with DCN and Areva-TA on December 22, 2006.
