Description

The Surface Movement Radar ASDE 3 (Airport Surface Detection Equipment) is an air traffic control radar operating in the Ku-band (15.7 to 17.7 GHz) with circular polarization. It scans the airport surface to locate and display the positions of aircraft and ground vehicles for air traffic controllers. The system employs pulse-to-pulse frequency agility over 16 pulses, which, along with circular polarization, enhances object detectability in adverse weather conditions like fog and rain. With a pulse repetition frequency of 16 kHz, a pulsewidth of 40 nanoseconds, and a peak power of 3 kW, it provides an instrumented range of 600 to 7300 meters, utilizing a beamwidth of 0.25 by 1.6 degrees and an antenna rotation speed of 60 rpm. Primary limitations include multipath reflections and target identification issues, common to all primary sensors; known installations include Bombay and New Delhi.
