Description

The AN/SPN-43 is an S-band (3500-3700 MHz) 2D air traffic control (ATC) radar deployed on aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships. It provides air navigational data, including azimuth and range, for aircraft control and identification from a minimum range of 250 yards up to 50 nautical miles (93 km) and altitudes from the radar horizon to 30,000 feet (9,144 m). Operators in the Carrier Air Traffic Control Center use specialized indicators to guide aircraft along a predetermined azimuth to within approximately one-quarter mile of touchdown. The system features a 120" × 80" reflector antenna with a cosecant-squared pattern, fed by a horn antenna, offering switchable linear horizontal or left-hand circular polarization. It operates as a coherent-on-receive radar with a pulsed magnetron transmitter, delivering a peak power of 1 MW, an average power of 1 kW, and a transmitted signal bandwidth of 1.6 MHz, with an antenna rotation speed of 15 rpm. The AN/SPN-43 is slated for replacement by SAAB's AN/SPN-50(V)1 Shipboard Air Traffic Radar.
