DM 63

The DM 63 is a tungsten-based armor piercing tank ammunition designed for the Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank from the Bundeswehr (German Army). This ammunition was developed specifically to fill a capabilities gap in missions out-of-area carried out by the German Armed Forces. The DM 88 is the training round fo the DM 63 KE projectile. The DM 63 kinetic energy round features a temperature-independent propulsion system. It can be fired by either the most sophisticated version of Leopard 2, the Leopard 2 A6 equipped with a 55-caliber 120mm gun, or by earlier models without major gun modifications. The German Defense Procurement Agency (BWB) placed a first contract worth 30 million Euros on 1 July 2005 for the DM 63 120mm ammunition. Rheinmetall will take care of development and production work associated with this tactical round. In December 2005 the government of Turkey placed an order with Rheinmetall worth 46 million Euro for the supply of 15,000 DM 63 120mm KE rounds. Deliveries were expected to start in July 2006 and continue through to June 2007. Turkey purchased this ammunition, which also included practice rounds, for its 298 Leopard 2 A4 main battle tanks purchased form Bundeswehr's inventory surplus.
