Almirante Padilla
The Colombian Navy Almirante Padilla or Type FS 1500 class of corvette (also called light frigate) was designed and built in Germany in the 1980s. The ship is intended to perform anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) in the littoral environment. The propulsion system features four diesel engines developing 23,000-shp and a top speed of 27 knots. The sensor package includes the Sea Tiger early warning radar and Krupp Atlas ASO 84-2 hull-mounted sonar. The weapon system includes eight MM40 Exocet anti-ship missiles, one 76mm gun, one 40mm anti-aircraft gun and 2 triple 12.75-inch torpedo tubes. Besides, the vessel includes a flight deck and hangar allowing for operation of a BO-105 helicopter. The Colombian Navy commissioned four boats in 1983 and 1984. In the 2000s, these light frigates were upgraded with new engines and the Barak-1 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system.
