The Northrop Grumman Bat is a family of tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (TUAV) having wingspans from 6.5 to 33.2 feet and suitable for irregular warfare environment. Swift Engineering originally developed this TUAV family as the KillerBee offering real-time ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance), communications relay and strike capabilities. On April 27, 2009, Northrop Grumman re-named the product line to Bat with its Aerospace Systems sector and Swift Engineering continuing design refinement, product line development, flight test support and manufacturing. The Bat/KillerBee Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) features a blended-wing aircraft body design with rear two-blade propeller developing 12-15 hp. It also has common systems for land or sea launch, recovery and ground control. The unique design of Bat based upon Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) enables growth for future payloads and additional mission capabilities. Bat is ideal for force protection in an expeditionary environment, and represents a major upgrade to today's embedded airborne surveillance, reconnaissance and target acquisition capability.
