Description

The LRLAP, Long Range Land Attack Projectile, is a new 155mm projectile designer for US Navy's AGS (Advanced Gun System) advanced cannon. The AGS gun system would be installed on board DD(X) destroyers and other US Navy's surface combatants. Each AGS fully automated magazine can store up to 920 LRLAP projectiles. The LRLAP family of projectiles features GPS/INS guidance system, additional/alternative seekers for multiple variants, anti-jam, and multiple payloads. LRLAP's primary objective will be land/ashore targets supporting amphibious assault and littoral warfare operations conducted by the US Navy and/or coalition forces. In July 2005, Lockheed-Martin received a $120 million contract from BAE Systems for further development and testing on the LRLAP projectile on behalf of the US Marine Corps (USMC). The SSMC requires the AGS firing LRLAP on the DD(X) destroyer to deliver precise, rapid-response, high-volume, long range fire support ashore during amphibious operations. The LRLAP munition is expected to undergo qualification tests in the 2009-2010 timeframe with the full rate production beginning in 2011. As of November 2016 no larger order for LRLAP ammunition was expected due to its price tag of $800,000 per unit.
