Description

The Igla is a fire-and-forget, man-portable, shoulder-launched, short range Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) family designed to engage low flying fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and cruise missiles. The family of missile systems includes the basic Igla (SA-18 Grouse and the naval version SA-N-8 Grouse western designations), the improved Igla-1/Igla-1M (SA-16 Gimlet and naval version SA-N-10 Gimlet NATO-codenames) and the latest Igla-S or Igla-Super (SA-24 Western designation). The Igla missile systems are intended to provide protection for military units on the battlefield and installations as well as Russian Navy warships and Russian Air Force rotary wing aircraft. The Soviet Union introduced the Igla missile system in 1983.
