AN/APG-79
The AN/APG-79 is an X-band airborne active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar manufactured by Raytheon E-Systems, with Northrop Grumman responsible for the antenna design and construction. Designed for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler aircraft, it is also an advanced derivative intended to modernize F/A-18C/D fighter/attack jets for existing customers, including the US Navy and the air forces of Finland, Kuwait, Malaysia, and Switzerland, replacing the AN/APG-73. The system features numerous solid-state transmit and receive modules, an advanced receiver/exciter, a ruggedized commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) processor, and new power supplies, providing high reliability, reduced operational costs, and capabilities such as Synthetic Aperture Mapping (SAR). With an instrumented range of 80 nautical miles (approximately 150 km) against a 1 m² target, flight tests began in June 2003, leading to upgrades like the AN/APG-79(V)4 with gallium-nitride transmitter modules and improved range.
