The People's Liberation Army (PLA) FeiNu 6 (FN-6) is a man-portable, shoulder-launched, infrared (IR) guided surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to engage a wide range of airborne threats flying at low altitude. It was developed by China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CPMIEC) in the 1990s in parallel to the QW missile series. The FN-6 missile is capable of neutralizing airborne targets flying at altitudes between 150 and 3,5000 meters at ranges between 500 and 6,000 meters. The missile's maximum speed varies between 300 and 360 meters per second. The FN-16 is a new version introduced in 2008 and featuring UV seeker in addition to the IR seeker as well as improved resistance against electronic countermeasures (ECM). The FY-6 and FY-16 refer to the FN-6 and FN-16 missiles but fitted with an Identification Friend of Foe (IFF). The HongYing 6 or HN-6 is a further variant of the FN-6/16 missile with improved performance. The FN-6A is a vehicle-mounted version unveiled in 2005 with each HMMWV-like vehicle equipped with two quadruple missile launchers. The FN-6A is very similar to the United States Army Avenger air defense system. The FB-6A is a version deployed in two separated vehicles one carrying the missiles and the other carrying the fire control radar. The FN-6A and FB-6A had little success and were deployed in small quantities within the PLA. In 2012, the PLA unveiled a cannon/missile air defense system based upon the ZBL09 8x8 armored chassis and utilizing the FN-6 SAM but was not fielded. The FN-6 missile family has been declared operational with both the PLA and the Chinese Air Force.
