Description

The AS90 Braveheart is a 155mm self-propelled howitzer designed to perform indirect fire missions within the British Army units. It was first deployed in 1993 replacing aging M109 and Abbot howitzers. The AS90 howitzers have been delivered with 39 and 52 caliber guns. They provide high rates of fire through the use of highly automated systems, as well as highly accurate strikes. It can fire all NATO standard 155mm ammunition. The AS90 howitzer was deployed for the first during the former Yugoslavia conflict in the 1990s. During operation Iraqi Freedom (operation Telic for the British Army) in 2003 the AS90 indirect fire platform was successful employed against Saddam Hussein's Army. Typically, it fires NATO L15 155mm (96-lb or 43.5 kg) unassisted projectile at ranges of up to 24.7 km. In addition to the 155mm main gun, AS90 features a roof-mounted 7.62mm machine gun. The British Army procured 179 AS90s and plans to upgrade the entire fleet through the standardization of the more capable 52-caliber main gun. The AS90 will be available for the export market as the AS90 Braveheart and Desert AS90. Poland and Sweden could be the first and second export customers of the AS90 howitzer. As of June 2005, there were 146 AS90s in service with six regiments of the British Army's Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Artillery.
