Description

The DM 11 is a 120mm x 570 Insensitive High Explosive (IHE) round designed to be fired from 120mm smoothbore guns (L44 and L55) taking out non-armored and lightly armored targets in asymmetric encounters as well as field fortifications at ranges of up to 5,000 meters. This 120mm round is also suitable against targets taking cover behind walls. The modular IHE round is programmable when loaded and features an airburst detonation capability. It includes warhead with a programmable fuse and ballistic cap, a tail unit, driving band, a combustible case with a propelling charge, a newly designed stub case with primer and an integrated data link cable for programming. The IHE warhead detonates in three different modes: impact fuse mode/point detonation (PD): the warhead detonates inside the target medium to create a larger breech; programmable delay/point detonation with delay (PDwD): the warhead detonates after penetrating the target; and programmable airburst (AB): the warhead detonates in front of, or above, the selected target. The HE SQ "High Explosive Super Quick" RH31 is an all climate 120mm round featuring impact function with or without delay similar to the DM 11 projectile. It can be fired with no need for modifying existing systems. The DM 11 and HE SQ RH31 weapons were developed on behalf of the German Ministry of Defense and unveiled by Rheinmetall Defence in June 2011 (DM 11). The United States Marine Corps was the first operator for the DM11 multi-purpose (MP) round on the M1A1 Abrams main battle tank. Germany's Leopard 2 tanks are expected to receive the new ammunition.
