Description

The AN/MPQ-53, also known as AN/MPQ-65 in its PAC-3 variant, is a G/H band, frequency-agile multifunction missile defense radar manufactured by Raytheon E-Systems in the United States. Its phased-array planar antenna, measuring 2.44 meters in diameter with 5,161 elements, is mounted on a semi-trailer and includes separate arrays for target detection, tracking, missile guidance, and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) functions, the latter performed by an AN/TPX-46(V)7 interrogator. Operating with a peak power of 10 kW and pulsewidths of 0.4, 1.3, 2.0, 2.7, or 50 µs, the radar performs surveillance, tracking, guidance, and Electronic Protective Measures (EPM) across an instrumented range of 3 to 170 km, time-sharing these functions in millisecond cycles. It can track up to 100 targets, guide up to nine missiles, and offers 54 operational modes with 32 configurable beam patterns, allowing for tailored power, waveform, and physical dimensions to optimize performance for various ranges, clutter conditions, and EPM functions within its 90° search and 120° track sectors.
