Description

The SMART-L (Signaal Multibeam Acquisition Radar for Targeting) is a D-band (formerly L-band) long-range naval surveillance radar manufactured by Thales Naval Nederland (formerly Hollandse Signaalapparaten BV SIGNAAL). Designed to NATO specifications for a Volume Search Radar, it specializes in early detection and tracking of small aircraft and missiles, providing accurate 3D target information for threat evaluation and rapid weapon system lock-on, especially in multi-attack scenarios. Its phased array antenna, rotating at 12 rpm with a 2.2-degree beamwidth and an instrumented range of 460 km (250 NM), uses 16 arrays for transmission and 24 for reception. The system processes received energy through 24 channels, forming 14 elevation beams from 0 to 70 degrees, and employs a Doppler processor for clutter rejection and tracking of up to 1000 air targets. It also features a D-band surface surveillance channel for automatic detection and tracking of up to 100 surface targets, with tracking data transferred to command and control systems.
