Description

Merlin is a solid-state aircraft birdstrike avoidance radar that operates simultaneously in both S-band and X-band. It employs a dual-scanning system: an S-band antenna rotates horizontally to provide 360-degree surveillance, while a wide-beam X-band antenna rotates vertically to scan a hemisphere above the runway. The X-band antenna's pattern extends 10 to 15 degrees on either side of the runway centerline, providing altitude measurements up to 10,000 feet. Located mid-field on the primary runway, Merlin offers real-time bird detection, tracking, and alerting for hazardous bird activity at commercial airports and military airfields, with an instrumented range of 2 to 4 nautical miles (approximately 3.4 to 7.5 km).
