AN/SPS-40
The AN/SPS-40 is a naval long-range, high-powered, two-dimensional (2D) surface and air search radar operating in the UHF band (402.5-447.5 MHz) for detecting targets at long and medium ranges. It features 10-channel operation, a digital moving target indicator (MTI) for excellent subclutter visibility, pulse compression, and a high-data short-range mode (SRM) for detecting small, low-altitude, close-in targets. The AN/SPS-40B baseline, encompassing B, C, and D variants, offers enhanced performance with minimal operator interaction, characterized by long-range resolution and accuracy, lightweight design for easy installation, and high reliability. Its UHF operating frequency provides resistance to weather clutter and low vulnerability to anti-radiation missiles. The system's receiver has a sensitivity of -115 dBm and a noise figure of 4.2. The antenna utilizes a truncated paraboloid reflector of open lattice work construction, covered with a wire screen to reduce weight and wind resistance. It incorporates a dual feed, including the primary radar section and an integral identification friend-or-foe (IFF) antenna. The primary slot-type feed, with a tuned cavity and flared shape, ensures proper illumination of the reflector, forming a fan-shaped beam with a 19° vertical beamwidth and a 10.5° horizontal beamwidth. The antenna achieves a gain of 21 dBi with a sidelobe attenuation of 27 dB, rotating at 7.5 or 15 rpm (6 rpm for SPS-40 and -40A). The AN/SPS-40E, an upgraded version, replaces the tetrode tube transmitter with a solid-state design. This transmitter delivers a nominal 250 kW peak power (2 kW average power) by combining 112 identical and interchangeable power amplifier modules in parallel, arranged in two groups of 56. The solid-state architecture provides improved performance, superior reliability, availability, and maintainability compared to its tube counterparts, which were sensitive to ship's artillery vibrations. This highly redundant design ensures gr
