Description
The TaepoDong, also referred to as Taepo-Dong or Paektusan, is a family of long-range, multi-stage, ballistic missiles being developed by North Korea since the late 1990s with the aim to hit targets at ranges from 2,000 km to 15,000 kilometers. Eventually, the TaepoDong missiles could be fitted out with nuclear warheads providing an excellent deterrent against South Korea, Japan and the United States. Besides, these missiles are test beds for North Korea's cutting edge ballistic technology developments. TaepoDong has close ties with North Korea's space launch vehicle programs. As of early 2009, the TaepoDong program consists of three variants TaepoDong-1, TaepoDong-2 and TaepoDong-X.
