Description

The Advanced Infantry Fighting Vehicle (AIFV) was a developed by the FMC Corporation as a potential replacement of M113 armored personnel carrier in the US Army. Finally, the US Army selected the M2 Bradley for that purpose leaving the AIFV for the export market. AIFV results lighter and less expensive than M2 Bradley. It is powered by a 264-hp diesel engine provided by Detroit Diesel Corporation allowing for a top speed of 61 kph. A wide range of turret-mounted guns and missile system can be integrated onto AIFV. Compared to M113, AIFV features improved armor and NBC protection and firepower. The turret is equipped with an Oerlikon 25mm gun and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. In addition to the three-man crew, seven infantryman are carried in the rear compartment. AIFV amphibious vehicles were sold to Belgium, the Netherlands (YPR-765? and YP-48?), the Philippines and Turkey in the 1980s. In the 1990/2000s it was sold to new international customers. South Korea's K200 vehicle family is based on the AIFV armored vehicle.
