CVN 79 John F. Kennedy
CVN 79 John F. Kennedy
The US Navy's CVN 79 John F. Kennedy class differs from the CVN 78 Gerald R. Ford because the Dual Band Radar (DBR) was replaced by the less capable but more affordable Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR) along with the SPQ-9B fire control radar. This change was carried out by the US Navy in order to reduce costs of the newest aircraft carriers while providing increased commonality across platforms. The CVN 79 will be commissioned in the 2023-2025 timeframe with another nine additional aircraft carriers to follow through 2058. These aircraft carriers will operate the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft, E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne radar aircraft and the F-35C Lightning II stealth fighter as well as a variety of rotary wing aircraft. Before 2030 this ship will operate the emerging UCLASS unmanned combat aircraft as well as the F/A-XX sixth generation combat aircraft beyond 2035.
