Description

The LCF-class frigates have been designed to provide advanced area air defense to the Royal Netherlands Navy. In addition, LCF-class frigates, also known as De Zeven Provincien-class, will provide secondary anti-surface and anti-submarine capabilities. The LCF frigates feature stealth design with reduced radar cross section for improved survivability against airborne threats. The SMART-L and APAR radar systems provide long range air surveillance, tracking and fire control. Each LCF frigate has 40-cell MK41 VLS containing Standard SM-2 Block IIIA, and ESSM surface-to-air missiles plus 8 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Typically each ship will carry a combination of 32 Standard SM-2 and 32 ESSM missiles (1 MK41 cell accommodates 4 ESSMs). A flight deck and a hangar are located at the stern of the ship for helicopter operations. The LCF-class frigate are able to accommodate up to 2 ASW helicopters (Lynx or NH90). The ship design has been inspired on the Karel Doorman frigates. Future growth potential will allow the LCF ships to accommodate up to 48-cell MK41 VLS hardening the ships' weapon system. The propulsion system includes 2 Rolls Royce (RR) Spey SM1C gasturbines at 39 MW sustained and 2 Stork Wartsila 16V26ST diesels at 10 MW sustained. The Royal Netherlands Navy plans to purchase up to 4 LCF-class frigates through 2005 to replace current Tromp and Jacob van Heemskerck class ships.
