The Sting Ray is a lightweight torpedo employed by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy onboard their rotary/fixed wing aircraft and surface ships. The Sting Ray has been designed to perform anti-submarine warfare. It entered service with the RN and RAF in 1983. The Sing Ray Mod 1 is an upgraded model with improved shallow water performance that will extend its service life through 2025. It is electrically powered and features an active homing head with autonomous operation mode once launched. A single shaped charge warhead ensures enemy submarine kill. The Sting Ray Mod 1 torpedo completed development in 2003 and is expected a achieve wide deployment with the RAF and Royal Navy by 2006 replacing Sting Ray Mod 0. On 14 February 2003, BAe Systems was awarded a production order worth £441 million ($786 million).
