BTR-22
BTR-22
The BTR-22 is an advanced variant of the BTR-82A wheeled armored vehicle developed following the lessons learned from the Special Military Operation in Ukraine. The BTR-22 engine has been placed in the front compartment providing enough for eight infantrymen along the three-man crew. The engine develops 330-hp and a top speed of 80 kilometers per hour. The V-shaped hull is intended to provide protection against mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The hull itself provides protection against 12.7mm projectiles thanks to increased armor protection compared to the BTR-82. The BTR-22 turret is equipped with a 30mm 2A42 automatic cannon, a 7.62mm machine gun and a single Konkurs-M anti-tank missile. Russia unveiled the BTR-22 in 2023 and the vehicle was ready to enter tests in August 2024. The production model may feature screens and LGSh-689 jammer to provide protection against drones. The Russian Ministry of Defense plans may call for the serial production of new BTR-22 wheeled armored vehicles or the upgrade of existing BTR-82As armored vehicles to the new standard. The BTR-22 is expected to be cheaper than the more sophisticated Boomerang.
