Type 16 Mobile Combat Vehicle
Type 16 Mobile Combat Vehicle
The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Type 16 Mobile Combat Vehicle (MCV) is an 8x8 armored vehicle equipped with a high-pressure 105mm cannon to take out main battle tanks (MBTs). The vehicle development started in 2007 and the first procurement order for 33 vehicles was carried out by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 2017. The vehicle is designed to defend the territory of Japan in the event of an invasion and not to be deployed overseas for that reason lacks air conditioning and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) protection. The JGSDF expects to procure 200-300 Type 16 armored vehicles to serve as highly mobile tank destroyers with an initial operational capability planned for 2018. The 26-ton Type 16 armored vehicle can be airlifted by C-2 aircraft for rapid deployment into the battlefield in the event of a major crisis. The turret is provided with a 105mm cannon designed by Japan Steel Works, a 12.7mm M2 machine gun and 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. The vehicle is powered by a 570-hp turbocharged diesel engine developing a top speed in excess of 100 kilometers per hour and a maximum range of 400 kilometers on road. The Type 16 vehicle modular armor provides lateral protection against ballistic threats of up to 12.7mm while the frontal section armor can withstand impacts of 20mm to 30mm projectiles.
