Starship

The Starship, formerly Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), is a new heavy lift space rocket being developed by SpaceX to support Moon flights beginning in 2023. The BFR uses a new and radical design compared with previous Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets. The new rocket focuses on reusability and will be a key component of a lunar mission scheduled for 2023. The payload capacity of the space system falls between 100 and 150 tons in reusable mode or up to 250 tons in non-reusable configuration. The space launch system consists of a upper stage, Starship, and a first stage, Super Heavy. The Starship is powered by six Raptor engines with three 3 intended for the atmospheric phase of the flight and another three, called RVac, modified for space vacuum flight. The Starship is 50 meters in height. The Super Heavy stage is powered by 13 Raptor engines in the core and 20 Raptor engines around the perimeter. The Super Heavy rocket is 69 meters in height. Combining both stages the Starship launch system is 120 meters in height. The first test launch carried out on April 20, 2023, ended in failure. The second one on November 18, 2023, ended in failure. The third one on March 14, 2024, ended in failure. The first successful test launch was carried out on October 13, 2024.
