Otter Norwegian Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV)
Otter

The Otter Norwegian Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) is designed for use in sheltered and coastal waters. It is robust and effective, specifically engineered for precise data acquisition, environmental monitoring, and surveillance. The versatile design of the Otter allows for easy integration of a variety of payloads, ensuring accurate data collection. Its Vehicle Control Station (VCS) simplifies access to survey sites by combining remote and autonomous navigation. The VCS also offers real-time data visualization through a user-friendly interface. Powered by four battery packs and two electric thrusters, the Otter operates emission-free for up to 20 hours, depending on the operating conditions and the payload. This all-electric system eliminates CO2 emissions, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional survey vessels. The compact, modular design of the Otter facilitates easy transport and quick deployment to various survey locations. Its plug-and-play system allows for swift changes in payload, such as sonar installation, enhancing adaptability and operational efficiency in the field. The VCS is a core component of the Otter’s Autonomous Navigation System, offering an intuitive interface for controlling and monitoring the vessel, which enables surveys to be conducted with optimal efficiency. The system includes various autonomous features and control modes, such as course and speed adjustments, heading control, and waypoint navigation, making it easy for operators to plan and execute missions. The flexibility of controlling the Otter through a rugged laptop or a mobile app with joystick-like controls enhances its mobility. Additionally, the VCS provides integrated sensor data displayed live on its multi-functional interface, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and quality control. Operators can monitor and adjust sensor data quality parameters through the VCS, enabling critical real-time operational decision-making. The Otter is designed with an emphasis on eco-friendliness, featuring electric thrusters powered by up to four powerful, easily interchangeable battery packs. This setup allows for an operational endurance of up to 20 hours at a speed of 2 knots, providing best-in-class endurance for its size. The battery solution also ensures quick access to replacement parts, utilizing off-the-shelf components. In addition, the Otter boasts a design focused on portability and modularity. Its modular construction and lightweight design enable it to be easily transported in small cargo vans, making it accessible for various survey sites. Each modular component weighs less than 20 kg and can be quickly assembled or disassembled by a single operator. This makes transporting, assembling, and launching the Otter convenient at locations such as lakesides, riversides, and harbors. With its sturdy catamaran build and integrated survey sensors, the Otter serves as a cost-effective, ready-to-use solution for surveying and monitoring enclosed waters and sheltered areas. Its advanced capabilities make it suitable for a range of applications, including bathymetric and hydrographic surveying, scientific data collection, as well as surveillance and security in small lakes, canals, rivers, ponds, and harbor areas.
