Description

The US Air Force (USAF) Long Range Stand Off (LRSO) is a new nuclear-capable cruise missile aimed at enhancing the B-52, B-1 and B-2 bombers offensive capabilities. The LRSO is intended as the replacement for the Air Launched Cruise Missile family (ALCM) deployed in the 1980s. In July 2016, the USAF released a statement requesting bids from defense contractors in order to down select two firms by the end of 2017 which will be tasked with carrying out the LRSO missile development. The new weapon system with a price tag of $20 billion may enter service in the 2020-2025 timeframe. The US Air Force plans to procure up to 1,000 missiles. On April 17, 2020, the US Air Force selected Raytheon as the single contractor responsible for the new cruise missile.
