Type 996 Radar
The Type 996 is an E/F-band naval radar manufactured by Alenia Marconi Systems of Italy, designed for 3D surveillance and target identification. It serves the U.K. Royal Navy for air and surface search, providing continuous three-dimensional data on targets within its operational envelope with sufficient range and accuracy for weapon system engagement. The system features a multi-beam, two-axis mechanically stabilized phased array antenna with a stripline feed, frequency agility, advanced processing, and extensive electronic protective measures (EPM) for operation in heavy electronic attack (EA) environments. It employs a power amplifier transmitter with a traveling-wave tube (TWT) end stage, a double superheterodyne receiver with pulse compression, and a software-based plot extractor capable of confirming over 100 tracks. The export version, designated AWS-9 radar, is available in both 2D and 3D configurations, with the 2D variant utilizing a parabolic antenna.
