Description

The 9P157 Khrizantema-S Russian Anti-Tank Guided Missile System was developed as a launch platform for the 9M123 Khrizantema missile. Although the 9P157 uses a BMP-3 chassis, newer missile, and dual guidance mode its mission and design philosophy is similar to the older 9P149 Shturm-S tank destroyer. The Khrizantema-S is mounted on a BMP-3 chassis, with the complete launch vehicle referred to by either the 9P157 (for the only vehicle in the 9K123 subfamily) or 9P157-2 and 9P157-3 (for vehicles in 9K123-1 Khrizantema-S subfamily) GRAU designations.

Layout The 9P157 is based on the BMP-3 chassis but is not fitted with a turret. Instead the troop compartment is filled with a twin round retractable pedestal launcher which is connected to an automatic loader. The 9P157 has an optical sight with laser for SACLOS guidance of the laser guided version of the 9M123 missile. Additionally a retractable radar is mounted for detecting targets for the MMW radar version of the 9M123.

Note A key feature of the Khrizantema-S weapon system is that it has two guidance modes, corresponding to the two target acquisition and guidance systems on the host platform. The primary guidance system consists of a millimetric radar, while the secondary consists of an optical sight and laser beam-riding guidance system.
Protection
Hull Armor The hull of the 9P157 Khrizantema-S is built from aluminum (possibly the ABT-102 alloy from Nii Stali), which is then covered with bolt-on hardened steel armor. Without the steel, the aluminum protects against small-arms fire and shell splinters, and the additional steel – which is concentrated on the front of the vehicle – is sufficient to stop 30 mm rounds fired at a range of 200 m.
