Description
The Shahin, 'Hawk' in English, is a supersonic, medium-range, surface-to-air missile (SAM) developed and produced domestically in Iran based on the US-made Hawk missile. The Hawk missile was supplied to Iran in the 1970s. This guided missile is intended to shoot down fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft at ranges in excess of 40 kilometers. It is one of the more sophisticated and important weapon systems developed ever in Iran because it provides some degree of self-sufficiency in air defense capabilities. Iranian press agency Fars reported that the Shahin was in production in June 2009.
