Description

The Light Amphibious Warfare (LAW) is a medium landing ship designed to support troops and equipment landing as well as supply of logistics. The ship is intended to operate in heavy contested environment were larger amphibious ships pose an optimal target for coastal defenses. The LAW vessels are intended to support military operations against a high end opponent such as China against who multiple, smaller landing ships have increased survivability and likelihood of success compared with larger vessels. The US Navy and Marine Corps expect to start construction of the first such ship in fiscal year 2022. In December 2025, the US Navy selected the LST-100 design from Damen. The Medium Landing Ship (LSM) program was won by Fincantieri with 18-to-35 ships to be built by 2040.
