Description

The AN/SPG-51 is a C-band naval radar system designed for gun and missile fire control, operating within a frequency range of 5,450 to 5,825 MHz. It incorporates an X-band continuous wave target illuminator specifically for RIM-24 Tartar and RIM-66 Standard missiles. The system features a 7.7-foot (2.5-meter) diameter dual-purpose parabolic reflector. While older versions of the target tracking radar utilized a klystron with a peak power of 30 kW, the AN/SPG-51D version was upgraded with a traveling wave tube, achieving a peak power of 81 kW, though the illuminator consistently uses a klystron across all versions. The radar has an instrumented range of 100 nautical miles (180 km) and a beamwidth of 1.6 degrees.
