Description

The 9K79, SS-21 Scarab NATO-codename and Tochka Russian nickname, is a short range ballistic missile designed to act as long range field artillery. It is a single-stage missile powered by solid fuel rocket motor and guided by an Inertial Navigation System (INS). Blast, fragmentation, submunitions, anti-radiation, and tactical nuclear warheads can be integrated in the Tochka missile. The 9K79 Theater Ballistic Missile (TBM) is mounted on a 6x6 all-terrain Transporter Erector and Launcher (TEL) vehicle. In addition, a tactical re-loader vehicle and a missile carrier have been provided to the 9K79 Tochka TBM system to facilitate the TEL's reloading operations. The Tochka-U, also known as Scarab-B, is an improved Tochka TBM featuring a new propulsion system to extend its range up to 120 kilometers. The Tochka and the Iskander theater ballistic missiles are the backbone of Russian long range artillery forces. The Tochka TBM is available for export achieving a significant success all over the world. It was employed by Russian forces during the military campaign of Chechnya.
